Royal Caribbean staffing pools with lifeguards

Royal Caribbean International has become the second major cruise line to staff lifeguards at its pools, a significant change in the cruise industry. Starting this week with the Oasis of the Seas, Royal Caribbean is rolling out a water-safety program that includes a lifeguard stationed at each pool during its hours of operation. In a statement, Royal Caribbean said all lifeguards have been trained and certified by StarGuard Elite, "an industry-leading International Aquatic Risk Prevention and Lifeguard program." To date, only Disney Cruise Line has hired shipboard lifeguards. Other cruise lines say they follow the policy seen at many land resorts where no lifeguards are provided and guests swim at their own risk. Royal Caribbean said its program is a comprehensive one "to raise awareness amongst our guests about the importance of vigilance while enjoying water features on our ships." In addition to lifeguards, swim vests will be offered to children ages 4-12 and a water safety presentation will be made in the Adventure Ocean kids program as well as a separate session on water safety for teens.
Royal Caribbean said its water-safety program will be implemented fleet wide by June.

Holland America Raises Gratuities Requirements

Holland America Line will charge an additional dollar per person, per day, for service charges on standard cabin bookings, and an additional $1.50 per person, per day, to passengers booked in suites effective May 1, 2017. The current hotel service charge for inside, ocean-view and balcony cabins is $12.50 per person, per day, which will be raised to $13.50. Gratuities for suites, currently $13.50 per person, per day, will jump to $15. Service charges, or gratuities, serve as compensation split among the ship's crew (from housekeeping staff and servers in the dining room to crew who work behind the scenes). If a passenger feels that service was not satisfactory, these charges can be removed at the end of a cruise by contacting the front desk. The updated charges take effect on each ship's first embarkation on or after May 1. The last time Holland America raised its gratuities was December 1, 2015.

The new sailings, available now through November 4, will take place on Empress of the Seas and will also include stops in Key West, FL, and Cozumel, Mexico.
Guests on the Cuba cruises will get to enjoy people-to-people experiences, including a trip in a classic 1950s American car through Havana, with stops at the historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba and the Plaza de Revolucin, as well as a scenic drive along the islands famous Malecn waterfront. Additionally, a walking tour offers a close-up experience of the citys most famous locales, including the old quarter and the Havana Club Museum, a rum producer housed in an 18th-century colonial mansion. For those intrigued by literary greats, an excursion will take them to novelist Ernest Hemingways favorite haunts.
In the evenings, travelers can experience Cuba’s diverse nightlife. From visiting the famous Tropicana Club to enjoying a performance by the Buena Vista Social Club or witnessing the family friendly ceremonial cannon firing at El CaƱonazo, guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of Cuba after dark.
