Royal Caribbean seeking lifeguards

Royal Caribbean International has put a help-wanted ad for lifeguards on its website.
The ad is entitled "Posting: Lifeguard Staff" &  says the applicant would monitor swimming pools, the H2O Zone, Splashaway Bay and other designated water attractions. It said the job is a 1.5 stripe officer position within the Marine Department and would report to the Lifeguard Supervisor. Currently, Disney is the only cruise line that staffs lifeguards at pools. Other lines have said guests swim at their own risk, the same policy adopted by many resorts and hotels. Several children have drowned or nearly drowned in pools on cruise ships in recent years, leading critics to question the industry's pool safety practices. In June, an 8-year-old boy was pulled from the pool on Anthem of the Seas after being submerged for eight to 10 minutes, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. He died two days later.

Holland America Line to Cancel all Cruise Calls to Turkey in 2017

Holland America Line is the latest cruise line to cancel all calls to Turkey in 2017, citing "guest preferences for alternate ports." This follows the announcement earlier this week that sister cruise lines -- part of Carnival Corporation -- Cunard and P&O Cruises are also removing all calls to Turkey from 2017 itineraries. In a statement issued this morning, the line said: "Holland America Line has made the decision to cancel all scheduled port calls to Turkey through 2017 based on guest preferences for alternate ports. "Ten departures in 2017 are affected and booked guests and travel professionals on these sailings will be notified. Shore excursions booked in affected ports through Holland America Line will be refunded and taxes, fees and port expenses will be adjusted accordingly." Changes will affect voyages onboard Amsterdam, Prinsendam and Koningsdam with the line expected to reroute itineraries to stops in Greece or Albania, although the line is yet to confirm this.
The U.S. Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens of increased threats from terrorist groups throughout Turkey and to avoid travel to southeastern Turkey.
The U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise that the threat from terrorism [in Turkey] remains high, although the situation has calmed since the attempted coup.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also cautions travel to Turkey.

Carnival Raises Bottled Water Prices ... Again for the second time this year.

In July 2015, the cruise line banned passengers from bringing their own bottles onboard but appeased the masses by offering inexpensive 12-packs for pre-order at a cost of $2.99 each. Cruisers would then find the water waiting in their cabins. In March of this year, prices were raised from $2.99 to $3.99 -- an increase of more than 30 percent. As of December 8, the price for a 12-pack has jumped again, this time more than 10 percent to $4.50 (plus gratuity if ordered onboard), according to Carnival's website.
"The ability to purchase bottled water in bulk and have it delivered to the stateroom continues to be a great convenience to our guests,"  The line declined to comment on why the prices were raised just nine months after the initial price increase.

Royal Caribbean streamlines drinks packages

Royal Caribbean International has pared down its offering of beverage packages to four, with just one that includes alcohol. The cruise line said guests can buy a package that includes beer, wine and cocktails for a price of $55 a day (the package includes drinks that sell for less than $12). Guests will get a $12 credit toward any drink that costs more than $12. The package also includes non-alcoholic beverages, premium coffee, tea and bottled water. The new packages went into effect Sept. 6.
Previously, Royal Caribbean offered packages that includes various levels of alcoholic drinks for $39, $57 and $67 a day. It said guests that had ordered a $39 package will be upgraded at no charge.
Royal Caribbean said the changes were made with a focus on making the vacation-planning process easy. Two other nonalcoholic options are the Classic Soda package, which provides soft drinks at $8.50 per day, and the Refreshment Package that includes a spectrum of nonalcoholic drinks for $26 a day. Guests can also order Evian water in packages of either 12 one-liter bottles ($39) or 24 one-liter bottles ($69).

Carnival makes early boarding more expensive

Carnival Cruise Line has made it more costly to get to the fun quickly on most cruises.
It has implemented a new pricing structure for its Faster To the Fun program, which offers early embarkation and other perks for a fee. The fee used to be $49.95 to $59.95 depending on cruise length. Now the maximum fee has been raised to $79.95 on cruises of eight days or longer.
The new schedule still starts at $49.95 for two- and three-day cruises.  The fee offers priority in security and check-in lines and express boarding, as well as a cabin ready for occupancy at boarding and priority luggage delivery. Faster to the Fun also comes with priority tender boarding and dining times. The cost is assessed on a per-cabin basis, so one fee covers multiple guests staying in the same cabin.

Cuba cruises on hold at Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean International is all prepared to go to Cuba, having spent $50 million refurbishing the 1,840-passenger Empress of the Seas for the itinerary. But lacking permission from the Cuban government, Royal Caribbean has put the ship into a holding pattern. It will be at least November before Cuba cruises can start.
This is the right sized vessel for Cuba, and our intention is someday we will be going there. Were just still waiting for the nod, said Vicki Freed, senior vice president .Freed led a tour of the Empress recently  showing off the improvements, including the addition of photos of Cuba in the Boleros nightclub. A Cuban combo in Boleros provided entertainment.
Empress of the Seas, a 27-year-old ship, had been sailing for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.s Spanish brand Pullmantur until earlier this year. A big part of Royal Caribbeans upgrade to the ship came in the galleys, which were completely gutted and redone. All the rooms got new carpets, drapes, linens and other soft goods. The six suites got new furniture and upgrades such as bedside USB ports.

Disney successfully adds to THE river cruise market

Adventures by Disneys first river cruising season is nearly halfway over, and so far, it has proved a successful move into a market generally overlooked by family travelers.  On this seven-day Danube sailing on the 170-passenger AmaViola from Vilshofen to Budapest, Ken Potrock, senior vice president of Adventures by Disney (ABD), said the company was already looking forward to its expansion to a second river, the Rhine, next summer, and that Disney was broadening river cruisings demographic.  [Were] bringing new people into the river cruise category, Potrock said. Theyre kind of locked into a segment of the population, and we can expand that segment by bringing families into the equation.
Adventures By Disney made its foray into river cruising in partnership with AmaWaterways, which purpose-built the AmaViola with family-friendly design details, including connecting staterooms and suites suitable for three- and four-member families, a rare feature on river cruise ships.  As you would expect with Disney, cruisers will find a family-friendly experience onboard, with movie nights and dance parties for kids. Disney Cruise Line fans will recognize the pirate party with face painting.  Kid-friendly excursions include a walking tour of Bratislava, Slovakia, where kids can complete a puzzle of landmarks; a salt mine tour in Salzburg, Austria, with train rides and wooden slides going into the mine; an Austrian park where kids can walk above the treetops on wooden ledges; and a marionette show offering children a chance to go backstage and try manipulating the dolls themselves.
Parents will appreciate touches such as the tour of Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, where Adventure Guides take the kids through garden mazes and to an onsite childrens museum, enabling adults to explore on their own.  Launching the first of this kind of product has been a learning process, and Disney said it would continue to tweak the programming and dining to make it better for both adults and children.   The biggest change so far is the minimum age for its cruises: next year, Disney raised it from 4 to 6, but it still recommends 8, based on feedback and seeing how the different aged kids were dealing with the river cruise experience, said Terry Brinkoetter, public relations director for Disney Destinations.   The line also adjusted its dining options. Previously, everyone ate dinner together in the dining room. Now, kids can choose to eat in the lounge, supervised by Adventure Guides who hang out and play games, giving parents a chance to dine alone. Teens may eat together in the wine cellar, and many on my cruise chose to do so. The main dining room has a kids menu for when families wish to dine together.
Disney also learned on the go with its bicycling excursions, increasing the minimum age from 12 to 14 years after seeing how challenging the tour was, with rough roads (think cobblestone streets) and non-English street signs. An example of the high level of onboard service is that with no bikes suitable for younger kids such as my 9-year-old for the ride on your own option, the cruise director had local bikes delivered to use.
Future plans
Potrock, who was also onboard with his family, said over dinner at the ships Chefs Table Restaurant that next years expansion to the Rhine on the upcoming 170-passenger AmaKristina made a lot of sense.  Theres a lot of culture and character in that region of the world, he said. And we think theres a lot of connection to classic Disney lore and stories there.  We think its going to play really wonderfully.  With ABD expanding to two rivers for summer 2017, the next area of growth might be cruise timing, Potrock said, possibly expanding into May or September. Disney currently only offers the cruises from June through August, which works well for ABD and AmaWaterways, he said, because summer is not the strongest market for older couples, the mainstay clients for river cruises, due to the heat and crowds in Europe, but is perfect for Disneys family-oriented approach.   Beyond that, he said he sees an opportunity to focus on the adult-only market and get creative in terms of thematics. With the popularity of wine cruises, he said, Disney could possibly find a tie-in with the Epcot Food and Wine Festival to create a new river cruise product.
ABDs Danube river cruise fares include daily shore excursions; WiFi; gratuities; all onboard and some off-ship meals; unlimited wine, beer and soft drinks with every lunch and dinner; and onboard entertainment, including classes for the kids.   Ports include Vilshofen and Passau in Germany and Linz, Melk, Krems and Vienna in Austria, as well as Bratislava and Budapest.

A Review of the new Viking Cruises' Viking Star

July 31, 2016 - Excerpts from an article written by Marilyn Green

It was clear  after only one week onboard Viking Ocean Cruises luxurious Viking Star that it is, first and foremost, a home to its passengers. The designers have found a way to combine elegance and comfort, making the vessel not only a ship, but also a residence.  When the 930-passenger Viking Star launched last year, most of the spotlight was on the ships hardware, as the line had promised to bring many features over from its river cruise operation.
Now, what stands out the most is the ships culture. Guests dont just cruise  they move in.
Its hard to explain the ships combination of beauty and comfort.
And, as in many homes, food is a key feature that brings people together. Although the dining room fare is beautifully planned and delicious, it was the more informal food offerings that were the topic of conversation among guests. The word got out quickly about Mamsens, the onboard deli that uses recipes from the owners mother (oh, the waffles!), but it was the World Cafe buffet with its open kitchen that truly impressed cruise veterans.
One passenger confessed to me that she had requested made-to-order eggs Benedict from the buffet three times. There were similar responses to the evenings Peking duck, the cooked-to-order steaks and the nightly spread of fresh and gorgeous seafood  crab, shrimp, prawns and sushi. A spread of tapas was also popular, and vegetarians devoured dishes such as mashed sweet potatoes, pastas, curries and soups. Dispensers in the buffet served beverages such as coffee, juice, lemonade, cappuccinos and a choice of still or sparkling water.
The room service menu, too, received high honors from guests, and featured dishes such as Angus New York strip steak, grilled chicken breast, Norwegian salmon and artisan cheeses, gravlax (salmon cured with salt, pepper and dill) and Reuben sandwiches. Cheesecake, apple pie, chocolate mousse and dishes with no sugar added are also available.
Although the destinations Viking visits are incredible, I found it difficult to tear myself away from my stateroom. All accommodations have private verandas, superb king-size beds and bathrooms with glassed-in showers, heated tile floors and towel racks and  Freya toiletries. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen televisions, and guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi access.  Complimentary self-service laundry is available on every deck, and pre-measured laundry detergent is offered at no extra charge.
And its not only the guests who are enthusiastic about what is offered onboard Viking Star. Service is excellent as well, and employees seemed genuinely happy. At the bar, a couple asked the server how the crews quarters were. “ We know how lucky we are, the server told them. They are much bigger and better than on the other lines where I’ve worked”..
Inviting as it is, Viking Star is not for everyone. The minimum age to come onboard is 16, and there is no dazzling entertainment or a casino. But for those who find their match here, its a difficult place to leave

Caribbean Princess Skips Dublin Port of Call After Losing Propulsion

Caribbean Princess was forced to skip a scheduled port call in Dublin, Ireland after losing propulsion at approximately 7 a.m. local time. The ship was about 25 nautical miles southeast of Dublin, at the time, in the Irish Sea. Though propulsion was lost, at no time was the ship without electrical power and has been operating with full ship/hotel services, including air conditioning, galleys, lighting and toilets. The ships Chief Engineer, in collaboration with Princess Fleet Technical team restored propulsion, which the line said was due to "a glitch in the electrical system in the engine room." However, due to the amount of time the ship was without propulsion it had to forgo its visit to Dublin. Passengers who booked shore excursions through Princess are being refunded. Caribbean Princess, which was on day three of a 12-day cruise, is enroute to Belfast, Northern Ireland, which is the next scheduled port of call on the itinerary. Princess has sent technical and electrical engineering experts to meet the ship. (August 4, 2016)

Celebrity Cruises to Sail Caribbean Year-Round, Will Debut New Family and Culinary Programs

Celebrity Cruises to Sail Caribbean Year-Round, Will Debut New Family and Culinary Programs

Celebrity Equinox will sail year-round Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami in 2017. Beginning next April, the 2,850-passenger ship  will offer a total of 24 cruises from its new homeport, including seven-night itineraries between June and August, and 10- and 11-night itineraries throughout the rest of the year.
To kick off its first summer season in the Caribbean, the ship will host an 11-night cruise with two overnight stays in New Orleans, during the city's famous Jazz and Heritage Festival, starting April 24. Celebrity will wrap up its 2017 summer season with a "President's Cruise" on August 27. On the eight-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, the line's president Lisa Lutoff-Perlo will treat passengers to special events and excursions.
Conversations with Celebrity passengers had inspired her decision: I can't tell you how many people I bump into  and they say: 'We're going on a summer vacation this year, but we can't go on Celebrity because you don't have a ship in the Caribbean'. Every time I hear that, my heart breaks. Now they can't say that to me anymore."
In addition to a year-round presence in the Caribbean, Celebrity will debut a new family program with an array of new enrichment options for kids. "Summer Camp at Sea" will include activities such as video creation, cooking classes and marine biology lessons.
Celebrity also will continue to raise the bar on its food and wine offerings. The new "Taste of the Caribbean" program will feature complimentary activities like cooking and mixology demos, rum and reggae parties on the Lawn Club, and brunch and bubbles. Foodies can even splurge on more exclusive experiences such as a fresh pasta and mozzarella making class with lunch in Tuscan Grille, and a five-course tasting dinner with Celebrity chefs.
The previously announced Chef's Market Discoveries' shore excursion and Blendtique wine-blending classes also will be available on Celebrity Equinox sailings.
Celebrity is offering four free perks ($150 onboard credit, unlimited internet, a premium beverage package and prepaid gratuities) per passenger, on select 2017 cruises booked between July 19 and August 31, 2016, to celebrate the move.

Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Bringing Most Beverages Onboard

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that, effective July 15, the line will prohibit guests from bringing any beverages onboard.  The ban includes liquor, beer and non-alcoholic drinks such as water, soda and juices, but does not include purified or distilled water in factory-sealed containers for use in conjunction with medical devices or for the reconstitution of infant formula. Guests can also still bring fully sealed and/or corked wine bottles for personal consumption onboard, although wine bottles are subject to screening and a corkage fee (for guests 21 years of age or older). Open beverages of any kind must be consumed at discarded at security on embarkation day and at any port of call. Norwegian said that the new policy brings the company in line with other best practice travel security protocols and will reduce the need for time-consuming individual screening and package inspection of large volumes of beverages.
Other cruise lines have also moved to ban guests from bringing certain types of bottled beverages onboard. Last summer, Carnival Cruise Line updated its beverage policy to ban bringing bottled water. Instead of security concerns, however, the line cited the need to deter guests from smuggling alcohol onboard. At the time, travel agents praised Carnivals concurrent decision to lower the price of its onboard bottled water, although others pointed out that liquor sold onboard could still cause behavioral problems.

Cruise lines have cancels calls in Istanbul in the wake of Tuesdays terrorist attack on Ataturk International Airport, USA Today reports. Celebrity Cruises has said that two vessels that were scheduled to use Istanbul as a base will instead be based out of Piraeus, Greece (Athens). Windstar Cruises will sail the Wind Star out of Piraeus instead of Istanbul, as well as cancel calls at Kusadasi (Ephesus), while Cunard Line has cancelled all calls in Istanbul for the rest of the year. Seabourn has moved Seabourn Odyssey Saturday sailing, which was set to depart from Istanbul, to depart from Piraeus instead. The line has not changed for other Istanbul departures over the rest of the summer and fall, and the line will still continue other Turkey calls. Neither the UKs Foreign Office nor the U.S. State Department have changed their travel device for the country. This is important because new travel alerts or warnings generally trigger companies to change their travel plans.

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises  still have calls in Turkey that are going ahead as scheduled.
Other cruise lines have already cancelled or altered Turkey calls over the past year. Crystal Cruises has cancelled calls in Turkey. In January, MSC Cruises suspended all calls in the country, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) has suspended Turkey calls for all three of its brands: Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Terrorists opened fire on Istanbuls Ataturk International Airport late Tuesday, exchanging fire with police and then detonating a suicide bomb. The attack is the second in an Istanbul tourist area this summer, following a car bomb in the historic Beyazit Square neighborhood earlier this month.

They often have access to discounts unavailable to direct bookings. And in most cases, there is no cost for the service. Where else can you get professional advice for free?

Professional Cruise Agents Got Your Back: Stuff happens. Professional Cruise Agents  are the best resource when it comes to trouble-shooting unforeseen travel glitches like lost luggage, cancelled excursions or travel delays. This can range from anything from new spa offerings to changes in the ship’s itinerary. They’ll help you take advantage of the latest onboard offerings or onshore excursions – and handle any last-minute concerns.

Viking Ocean Cruises: The Next Big Thing in Cruising Value is Here

Viking Cruises  continues to make waves and now it is on the high seas with its new Viking Ocean Cruises ships. The company’s mission is simple: luxury level cruise travel offered at an astounding value.
At first glance, Viking cruises aboard the new Viking Star and Viking Sea are approaching luxury pricing, and certainly quality, but when one considers the breadth of inclusions, the per diem breakdown puts it much closer in line to lower premium level cruise costs. Inclusions start with the usual meals and basic drinks but extend well beyond to alternative restaurants; 24-hour specialty coffees, teas and room service; wine, beer and soft drinks during lunch and dinner; self-service laundry (full-service for suites); Wi-Fi internet and one shore excursion in every port. The latter two are usually only included with the upper echelon of cruising.
Even all port charges and government taxes are bundled in, and the spa and fitness center facilities are also free of charge. Only treatments cost extra. Otherwise, the ships fantastic thermal suite, therapy pools, snow room, steam room and sauna are available gratis.
Perhaps the biggest factor is how the it compares to upscale cruise lines like Azamara Club Cruises and Oceania Cruises. Viking Ocean Cruises already has two brand new ships sailing, with another four scheduled through 2020. Viking ships  with fresh amenities such as all-veranda accommodations and more spacious showers.
Viking Cruises founder and chairman Torstein Hagen said, The thing that differentiates ourselves from competitors  is what incredible value we are. Its not immediately obvious to everybody because so much is included in what we offer.
They really defies categorization, sitting somewhere between upscale and luxury companies at premium line prices. In reality, Viking is defining its own version of luxury that is more casual and homey. Viking is wise to avoid classifying itself as a luxury line, however, realizing that luxury means different things to different people. Of course, the service standards onboard are so high though that guests feel greatly pampered regardless.
The bottom line is consumers need to look, well, beyond the bottom line, to recognize the Viking value found in its remarkable inclusions, hardware and software alike.

Clients of theCRUISEOUTLET.com can take advantage of an Early Booking Discount on 2017 and 2018 itineraries, including 2-for-1 cruise fares plus up to $1,000 per person off flights.

Extensive upgrades to Norwegian's private island Great Stirrup Cay include a new family recreation area; addition of a 1,000 foot-long zip line; expanded dining options; and an exclusive access lagoon retreat with private air-conditioned villas to open by Summer 2017
They have announced details of the new experience that awaits guests at the company's 250-acre private island oasis, Great Stirrup Cay. The cruise line is revolutionizing the destination to provide new luxurious amenities, new adventure activities, enhanced and expanded dining options that, together, will present an upgraded atmosphere for guests visiting the island.

Great Stirrup Cay's 10 acre beach will soon feature a new half mile oceanside boardwalk that will span the length of the shore with more than 100,000 square feet of pathway, offering easy access to the white sand beaches, as well as access to new shaded areas with benches for relaxation. Just adjacent to the beach, guests looking for a more active island experience can visit the new half-acre entertainment and activity complex, featuring a stage for live music, games and entertainers; basketball and volleyball courts, complete with bleachers; ping-pong tables; and a shaded picnic area where families can play board games or relax together. A new air-conditioned reception area will serve as the central hub for family-fun where guests can plan their day, reserve activities, rent board games and have access to expansive changing rooms. Guests seeking heart-pumping adventure will soon be able to enjoy a new zip line course featuring more than 1,000 feet of zip line, allowing guests a bird's eye view of the island and the sea as they soar through the air.  The island's two parallel zip lines offer the chance for some friendly competition and high-flying races. Those who prefer to take to the sea for exploration can snorkel through the island's new mystical underwater sculpture garden.  Using a waterproof map as a guide, adventure seekers can discover nautical creatures that tell tales of the deep from beneath the sea.
From the many new shaded lounge and picnic spaces, to new restrooms and lockers at the tender marina, guests will find a whole new experience by January 2017.

All dining and bar venues will be updated island-wide, adding new resort-style decking, shaded areas, high-top seating at all bars and family-style seating that will add  50 percent more seating capacity at all dining outlets. A new complimentary taco bar, Abaco Taco, will be added near the island's entertainment hub, where guests can create their own favorite tacos. The island's 8,500-square foot buffet will be redesigned to provide faster and more efficient service for guests, and the deck surrounding the buffet will be expanded so  guests can enjoy their lunch at new seating areas. The center of the island will feature a shaded lounge area with modern chic furniture and bar service, for guests who want to enjoy paradise in style. Building on the brand's partnership with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, Great Stirrup Cay will also feature a LandShark Bar & Grill. Inspired by the traditional beach bars of the Atlantic Coast, LandShark Bar & Grill offers the perfect mix of casual dining, free-flowing drinks and fun with panoramic ocean views and indoor and outdoor seating. Menu items will be available à la carte.

Guests seeking the ultimate island luxury will experience a retreat like no other at Great Stirrup Cay's exclusive lagoon enclave, beginning in Summer 2017.  This private area of Great Stirrup Cay features a secluded, pristine beach; ocean view restaurant; a posh Mandara Spa; sheltered family area; and 22 air-conditioned private villas available for reservations, ranging in size from studios to two-bedrooms. The lagoon will be available on a complimentary basis to The Haven and Suite guests, along with guests who purchase an on-island Mandara Spa service.  In addition, a limited amount of passes to the Lagoon will available for purchase on each sailing. The Lagoon experience begins as guests are welcomed by staff at a modern, air-conditioned reception area complete with beach chic décor that features floor to ceiling windows overlooking the area's expansive private beaches. From the reception building, guests can reserve activities, rent equipment, or relax in the shade on the outdoor terrace or an additional shaded seating area nearby that can be accessed by the lagoon bridge. The center of the lagoon will feature a floating swim up bar for guests to enjoy their favorite cocktails without ever having to leave the water. Both children and parents will enjoy a shallow, partitioned family beach area along with grassy areas for active play, swing sets, and picnic tables. Those guests celebrating a special occasion or traveling in a large group can reserve an expansive, well-appointed private room for private functions of up to 75 guests, with food and beverage service available. Guests looking to refresh and recharge during their private island getaway can indulge in the full range of treatments offered at the lagoon's luxurious Mandara Spa, with four treatment rooms offering signature spa services. Guests who purchase a reservation for one of Great Stirrup Cay's luxury beach villa will enjoy a completely pampered experience from ship to shore, as they will be whisked away by one of several air-conditioned shuttles running from the tender marina to the lagoon reception area. Studio villas feature an outdoor terrace, private bathroom and living/dining area, and can accommodate two to four guests. One bedroom villas accommodate four to six guests and feature a bedroom, private bathroom, living and dining areas and outdoor terrace with a hot tub. The ultimate island escape, Great Stirrup Cay's two bedroom villas can accommodate up to 10 guests and feature two bedrooms, two private bathrooms, living and dining areas, and an expansive outdoor terrace with a dining area and hot tub. Exclusively for guests of the lagoon retreat, the two-story Silver Palm restaurant will offer complimentary dining  in a stunning setting, with both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a rooftop terrace overlooking the area's expansive ocean views. Carnival Vista wears its innovations well

The Carnival Vista, four years in the making, is distinguished by a number of new features that seem so right on a cruise ship, you wonder why no one thought of them before.
The one that will send a lot of photos is SkyRide, the recumbent bicycle that riders propel beneath an 800-foot-long track suspended 150 feet above the waterline. SkyRide is just fun, It lasts about 90 seconds at normal pace and riders can reach speeds of 18 miles an hour if they pedal hard.
The dual track on SkyRide allows for companions to cycle together or friends to race the 800-foot circuit.  Although its appeal to kids is obvious, wait times on a recent cruise peaked at 35-40 minutes, but that may grow as more children board during the summer months.
There is the Family Harbor: a class of cabins grouped around a key-carded lounge for families. The concept is so functional, its hard to believe no one has tried it before. The Family Harbor Lounge is surrounded by family-friendly cabins and access is controlled by key card. Some family cabins are designed with a bed nook and TV that can be curtained off from the rest of the cabin, which both kids and parents will find a cool idea for different reasons.  In addition to a unified nautical design theme, the cabins come with perks such as free meals for kids at most specialty restaurants and a night of free babysitting.

Dreamscape is a central pillar in the atrium that projects moving images through LED technology.
Bringing IMAX to sea also seems a no-brainer, if a little complicated to execute. Carnival has taken a three-deck space in the interior to put 178 raked seats in front of the enormous IMAX screen.
Programming includes documentaries ($5.50), and 3-D family features and current Hollywood blockbusters ($12.95), which by the third quarter will be delivered digitally by satellite at the same time that they open in 1,100 IMAX land theaters.

The Vista has other innovations that merit high grades. Visitors gawk at Dreamscape, a multi-story mushroom-shaped pillar that is programmed with ever-changing images crafted in LED lights.
The Vistas photo gallery is the first end-to-end digital gallery on Carnival. Photos display on a video wall and are available for purchase on a guests hand-held device through the Carnival Hub app.
Light fixtures that look like rocket nozzles are part of the design scheme for Carnival Vista.

Another winning space on the ship is the Cuban-themed complex on Deck 5 aft. Havana Bar has been upgraded from the Carnival Sunshine to have more seating, a better bandstand/dance floor, and better theming, including dominos tables and a colonial map of Cuba on the wall. It extends outdoor to an aft pool area, and is surrounded by Cuban-themed cabins and suites. The latter come with open air patios that connect via a deck walk to the pool. The whole outdoor area is private to Havana cabin guests from 6 am to 5 pm, giving it a club atmosphere.
I didnt catch all of the entertainment, but more than ever before Carnival is taking musicians and dispatching them to parts of the ship you don’t expect to see them in. Examples include a strolling accordion player and a New Orleans jazz trio stationed at the entrance to one of the main dining rooms.
The stateroom corridors on Carnival Vista feature floor-to-ceiling photo panels. The Vistas design is the most elegant ever for a Carnival ship. I particularly liked the orange light fixtures that look like rocket nozzles and give the ship a lot of visual thrust.  Another neat trick is the use of floor to ceiling photo panels in the stateroom corridors, which make the cabin doors almost disappear and keep the corridors from being visual dead zones.
A few things about the Vista were disappointing, puzzling, or didnt work. Not building USB charging outlets next to the beds is a missed opportunity on any new cruise ship. The Vista doesnt have them.
There are odd changes of elevation of an inch or two in some stateroom corridors that could catch walkers by surprise.

The Pixels photo gallery is the first end-to-end digital gallery in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet.
The otherwise appealing Lido Marketplace buffet can feel overcrowded at breakfast, and the excursion staging areas at times are overwhelmed, resulting in long lines.
The new a la carte Seafood Shack seemed expensive to me, compared to the great value Carnival delivers in other specialty restaurants. The prices are not bad compared to what you get someplace else.
